Engineers blasted through rough terrain, splitting the Joetsu Line in two. They created the deepest underground platform in the country.

The Descent into the Earth

You start at ground level near the ticket gate. Looking down, the massive, long stairwell stretches into shadow and seems to have no end.

Take the plunge and start walking down. It is surprisingly cool and damp down here, even during the peak of summer.

A Long Wait for the Train

After the fifteen-minute climb down, you reach the silent, tunnel platform. It will be another hour before any train actually arrives.
